Run Coach - CORVALLIS, OR

I was born and raised in Montana, and got my undergraduate degree in athletic training from the University of Montana. I moved to Boston in 2015 to get my master's in journalism from Boston University. After graduating from BU, worked for Men's Health Magazine as a writer for about a year and a half before starting a job as a high school anatomy and physiology teacher at Chelsea High School in Chelsea, Massachusetts. I've been at CHS since 2018, I've also helped coach their cross country and track teams. I have worked as a group fitness instructor since 2017, and am a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). I am now transitioning out of secondary education and starting my tenure as a kinesiology PhD student at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.

Coaching Philosophy

I am a firm believer that the body follows the mind, so my philosophy starts with setting clear intention at the beginning of any training cycle. One of my coaches told me once that running works in 3's- 33 percent of the time, running feels absolutely incredible, 33 percent of the time, it feels like complete trash, and the last 33 percent it's just ok. Having that intention comes in pretty clutch about 66 percent of the time!

I am very into helping people become more resilient runners and am a big proponent of incorporating strength and conditioning, proper warm-ups, prehab work, and so on. Also, I believe that everyone has unique strengths, sometimes strengths they don't even know about, and I love finding those and capitalizing on them. Addressing weaknesses certainly has its place, but I've found in coaching high schoolers, for example, that so many things- confidence, stamina, resilience, strength- skyrocket when strengths are exploited in the right way.

Why I Run

I've had a lot of instances where running was taken away from me (a silly number of knee surgeries, mostly), sometimes for several months at a time. While I tried my best to find substitutes, there is not really anything that makes me feel most like myself. I also LOVE the endless amount of challenges there are in running- I'm a pretty competitive person, so I enjoy the aspect that there is always something to work on and improve on, which can mean so many different things.

Favorite Race

The most thrilling race was Boston 2018 for me- the crazy monsoon year, and my marathon PR! But admittedly, I do not ~love~ the marathon distance. I do love 10ks and 5ks though- I really enjoy the Spring Classic 5k in Cambridge, and am doing the BAA 10k for the first time this June, so that might be a new favorite, we'll see!
